Traversing through the mind of an addict is unsettling at best. Phury's reliance on red smokes crippled him emotionally and physically, and set him on a rocky course to self destruction and failure. This was a hard story and the developing relationship between Phury and Cormia was clouded by his drug hazed view of events. It was difficult to experience their romance in the midst of all this, which is unfortunate. It would have been more interesting to follow Cormia's awakening with Phury at her side. While the story was realistic, I wanted out of it and found it depressing. The salvation of this book were the other events occurring simultaneously, involving John Matthew, Blay and Qhuinn primarily. It's a dark story, I guess one that needed telling. I just wish there was more light to balance everything. On the bright side, it has a terrific ending.
